Claims Adjuster – Cargo & Equipment

About the role
The Claims Adjuster is responsible for investigating, evaluating, resolving and subrogating cargo and equipment claims across multiple statutory and contractual liability regimes. You will act as a primary point of contact for customers, insurers and internal stakeholders, ensuring timely and accurate claim handling.
Key responsibilities
- Receive and acknowledge claim assignments from various sources, acting as a single point of contact for high‑volume customers.
- Gather and maintain all relevant claim and insurance documentation, updating records in the claims database.
- Conduct investigations through direct communication with customers or third‑party surveyors, arranging salvage or destruction of damaged cargo as needed.
- Perform legal liability analysis based on bills of lading, carrier agreements and insurance policies, reserving claims on a most‑probable‑loss basis.
- Negotiate settlements with customers, consignees and subrogating parties to achieve fair resolutions.
- Manage litigation by coordinating outside counsel, responding to discovery requests and representing the company in mediation or trial.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and company policies.
- Identify process improvement opportunities and monitor adverse claim trends.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in business, finance, risk management or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Professional designation such as AIC or ARM preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of claims experience in transportation or logistics, handling ocean marine, motor carrier and intermodal claims.
- Experience with a wide variety of cargo types is desirable.
Required skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Data reporting tools such as Power BI.
- Familiarity with claims systems: Riskonnect, Magaya, TMW, C‑Sight, Blue Yonder.
- Knowledge of WAMS or McCleod is a plus.
