Payroll Accountant

About the role

The Payroll Accountant supports payroll operations and related accounting activities through detailed analysis, processing, and reporting. This position ensures payroll accuracy, compliance with laws and company policies, and provides insights through payroll data analysis while partnering closely with HR and Finance.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare, review, and post payroll‑related journal entries, including wages, taxes, benefits, bonuses, commissions, and accruals.
• Reconcile payroll registers, sub‑ledgers, and balance‑sheet accounts to the General Ledger, investigating discrepancies.
• Perform monthly reconciliations of payroll liabilities such as accrued wages, taxes, benefits, and garnishments.
• Support month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end close activities by preparing accruals, schedules, and documentation.
• Ensure payroll transactions comply with GAAP, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Reconcile payroll data between payroll systems and the ERP to maintain data integrity.
• Review payroll tax liabilities and filings to ensure federal, state, and local compliance.
• Prepare payroll‑related financial reports and analyses for financial statements and management reporting.
• Analyze labor costs, identify trends and variances, and recommend corrective actions.
• Prepare audit schedules and serve as a contact for internal and external auditors.

Required profile

• Experience in payroll accounting and financial reporting.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and payroll tax regulations.
• Ability to work with ERP and payroll systems to ensure data accuracy.
• Analytical mindset with attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
